Consumers have to pay more for Chocolates this year as prices for coca and other confectionery making ingredients rises. The German Press Agency quoted the executive director of the confectionery trade association Sweets Global Network, Hans Strohmaier as saying “Due to higher costs of cocoa, sugar and other ingredients further price increases has to be feared.” He was speaking on a congress in Munich.
The global sugar market has been trending downwards on the back of the persistent abundance of stocks, aggravated by a strong seasonal mismatch between export availability and import demand, according to Rabobank. It is time for all candy makers to get off their duff and send “e-mails, voice mails and money” to Congress to get rid of our national sugar welfare program. Pardon the Warren Zevon parody, but I believe this is the closest we’ve come to actually reforming our domestic sugar program since I’ve been editor of Candy Industry.
